'He Keeps His Word': Bengal Engineer Elated as PM Modi Pens Letter to Praise Sketch With Mother
Diptanu Mukherjee had gifted the prime minister a sketch of him and his mother on the occasion of Mothers’ Day on May 12

Life has changed for 35-year-old Diptanu Mukherjee ever since he attended Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s election programme in Chuchura on May 12 — also celebrated as Mothers’ Day. To mark the occasion, the mechanical engineer made a sketch of the prime minister and his mother — a gesture that drew the attention of PM Modi himself.

As Mukherjee held up the sketch in the crowd, the prime minister asked his SPG personnel to collect it and promised the 35-year-old that he would write to him.

Mukherjee did not think much of the promise, given PM Modi’s stature and hectic schedule. However, on July 1, the engineer got the surprise of his life as he received a letter from the prime minister, appreciating his creativity.

“I cannot explain in words what I am feeling today. I remember the prime minister said during his election campaign that he was missing his mother who was not with him this time. I felt very emotional and made the sketch. It was Mothers’ Day when I tried to show him the sketch from the crowd. He took the sketch but I never thought he would write a letter to me. It’s clear that he keeps his word. I am awestruck. He has written that he is moved by my sketch. My dream will get fulfilled if I get an opportunity to meet me,” Mukherjee said.

In the letter, the prime minister says Mujherjee’s “artwork has touched my heart and deeply moved me”. “Art forms such as literature and music are deeply embedded in the beautiful culture of West Bengal. It fills me with immense pride to see that people like you are upholding the glorious legacy.”

He added: “Seeing such talent and dedication in your artwork has infused me with even greater strength and commitment to serving the people in any and every way possible. May your work encourage other youngsters to serve the society and the nation and contribute towards enriching the socio-cultural landscape. I hope that you will continue to hone your creativity and artistic skills.”

The engineer has decided to bind the letter and keep it in his house as a memento as people from his locality have been queuing up to see the rare gift.
