New Delhi: The India-specific .in Internet address has touched the 2,00,000 registration mark, firmly establishing it as a leading country code domain globally with most of the users in India, the US and Germany.
The registration mark is almost double since last year, according to the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) and Afilias India Pvt Ltd on Sunday.
The domain initially started with 6,500 registrations before it was re-launched in January last year by Department of Information Technology (DIT) and National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI), said an official press release.
"This is an important milestone in the 10 Point Agenda for India that was introduced in 2004, as '.in' is now firmly established as a leading country code domain and reflects India's leadership in technology and the Internet," said Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran.
"The Government would shortly introduce the registration of '.in' domains in native Indian languages, beginning with Tamil and Malayalam," Maran added.
More than 150 countries are represented by the .in domain name with 63 per cent users registered in India and 37 outside the country.
According the release, the most popular countries are India, US, and Germany, which together account for over 81 per cent of registrations, followed by the Britain, The Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, Canada, Switzerland and Italy.
The minister stated: "Since .in is unrestricted, organisations and individuals across India can now reach their audience with an Internet address that proudly proclaims their Indian affinity. All Indians on the Internet should get their .in now and help proliferate Internet in India."
