PUDUCHERRY: After much reluctance, the AINRC government on Thursday finally invoked the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act,  popularly known as Goondas Act to detain a notorious criminal after a gap of seven months.Arunthamizhan (27), of Shanmugha Nagar, Ariyankuppam is accused in two murder cases along with kidnapping a college student for ransom, an extortion case among other cases. He has been absconding for nearly two years and operating from outside the UT, but was arrested recently while attempting a dacoity at Muthialpet. The detention orders have been served in the Central prison at Kalapet.This action comes after the Congress and AIADMK mounted pressure on the AINRC government to enforce the Goondas Act to book criminals involved in heinous crimes. Though Rangasamy was reluctant and even stated that existing sections of IPC were enough to control crimes, he made a U-turn following a spate of crimes, extortions. After the Act came into force on March 10, 2011, following its notification, six criminals have been detained under the Act. While four persons including notorious Siva alias Track Siva, Ilango, Aiyappan and Pravin Kumar were detained in June 2011. Chozhan and Murali were detained in July 2011.
