HIV human trial by next year

The Director General of Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) VM Katoch on Thursday said HIV vaccines, being developed in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, could be put to human trial by next year.‘’Tests on animals have already been completed and results are promising. Hopefully, human trials could start early next year,’’ said Katoch who was here to attend the convention on ‘Tribal Health Research Forum’ organised by ICMR-arm Regional Medical Research Centre (RMRC).The AIIMS had been working on the vaccine for the last decade.It was Dr Pradeep Seth of the Department of Microbiology of the AIIMS who was carrying out the research. Dr. Seth’s research was discontinued after his retirement.The vaccine is aimed at helping kill the HIV cells and boost the immune response system for long-term protection. Before Dr Seth’s work, Katoch said, scientists had worked on two HIV vaccines in India.
