Mumbai: A 65-year-old man, undergoing treatment at a private hospital in south Mumbai, was thrashed to death while two other patients were seriously injured when a fellow patient attacked them with an iron stand, police said.

According to police, the deceased was identified as Lilabihari Thakur, who underwent treatment for tuberculosis (TB), was repeatedly hit with the iron stand this morning in the general ward of the Bombay Hospital, police said adding that Thakur was to be discharged from the hospital on Monday.

The accused Shahabuddin Talukdar (42), suffering from AIDS and kidney failure and undergoing treatment in the ward, was arrested in this connection, police said.

According to police, Talukdar suddenly lifted the iron stand with hooks used for hanging blood and glucose bottles and began hitting Thakur and another patient Prafulchand Parmar (70) and his relative Janardhan Arte (66).

"The motive behind the attack is not yet clear as the accused is presently undergoing treatment in J J hospital," senior inspector at Azad Maidan police station Narendra Singh said.

Parmar and Arte sustained grievous wounds, while Thakur succumbed to his injuries, police said adding that further probe was on.
