The state government has decided to request the Centre to increase the age limit for compulsory education to 18 from the present limit of 16.The students needs to be educated from six years.
The government in the Assembly on Thursday has also sought a clarification from the Union HRD Ministry to spell out its share of funds for the effective implementation of the Right to Education Act (RTE).
Replying to a discussion on the lack effective implementation of the RTE by the state government, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri said that the Centre has been requested to bring PUC level education under the RTE and spell details on sharing the financial burden to implement the provisions of the Act.
Kageri, however, admitted that the RTE is not fully implemented across the state. “We would ensure that cent per cent admission under the RTE from next academic year by filling 1.2 lakh seats reserved under it,” he said and promised to revise the syllabus from next year in accordance with the Centre’s guidelines. The SSLC syllabus would be the first to be revised, he added. When opposition leader Siddarmaiah asked what action has been taken against Karnataka Unaided Schools Management Association (KUSMA) president G S Sharma for his alleged derogatory remark against students from lowereconomic strata, Kageri said that the government had already filed a case against him.
Meanwhile, Yeddyurappa asked the government to hire graduates and post graduates as primary school teachers to improve the quality of teaching. “Teachers completing the Teacher Certificate Higher Course are not properly equipped to respond to the increasing Intelligent Quotient in children,” he said. He suggested the government to sent the TCH teachers to complete their graduation in a phased manner.
