New Delhi: Jessica Lall’s family has got justice after a long wait and the punishment given to her killer is correct, said Neelam Katara, mother of Nitish Katara who was allegedly murdered by a co-accused in the Jessica case.
"Justice has been done and it must bring relief to Sabrina Lall (Jessica’s sister). I empathise with the victim's family which had to wait for so long to get justice," said Neelam.
Vikas Yadav, who was on Wednesday given a four-year prison sentence in the Jessica murder case, is accused of abducting and murdering Nitish.
Neelam said the case against his son’s alleged killers was strong and the Jessica case would not have any impact on it. "I have full faith in the judiciary and I am sure I will get justice," she said.
Ex-chief justice hails verdict
Terming the life sentence to Manu Sharma as appropriate, former Chief Justice of India V N Khare said it has reinforced the confidence of the people in the judicial system.
"Since the murder was not pre-meditated and it happened at the spur of a moment, it was not the case of capital punishment," he said.
Khare also welcomed the new trend of sending show cause notices to the witnesses turning hostile during trials. On the protection to the witnesses, he referred to Best Bakery case, in which both witnesses and victims were given protection. But, according to him, witnesses turn hostile due to fear or greed.
"Protection could be provided in case of fear, but the latter case of allurement is to be taken care of," he said.
