New Delhi: Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), Reliance Industries and Great Eastern Energy Corp (GEECL) have found over 6.2 trillion cubic feet of gas reserves below the coal seams, more than half of which was discovered by Reliance.
Reliance has established 1.69 tcf of Coal Bed Methane (CBM) reserves in Sohagpur (East) block in Madhya Pradesh and 1.96 tcf in Sohagpur (West), Minister of State for Petroleum and Natural Gas Dinsha Patel said in a written reply to a question in Lok Sabha.
ONGC has found 1.2 tcf reserves below coal seams in Bokaro while GEECL has struck 1.385 tcf reserves in Raniganj (South) in West Bengal.
"Any increase in availability of natural gas from domestic resources will reduce the corresponding import of natural gas or will increase availability of natural gas for domestic consumption," Patel said.
To a separate question, Patel said ONGC plans to spend Rs 4991.65 crore during 2006-07 on oil and gas exploration, which was higher than the previous year's exploration expenditure of Rs 3701.91 crore.
The company plans to spend Rs 2036.40 crore on survey and Rs 2955.25 crore on exploratory drilling in current fiscal.
ONGC produced 24.404 million tonnes of crude oil in 2005-06 as against 26.484 million tonnes the previous year.
"During 2005-06, shortfall in crude oil production was mainly due to Mumbai High North accident in Mumbai High. The Gas production has shown a declining trend over the years, mainly due to natural decline in the producing fields of ONGC viz., Bassein offshore field, Ankleshwar and Rajamundry," he said.
