New Delhi: The attack on Geo TV could really be an attack on him, Pakistan President General Musharraf told Geo TV in a phone interview. He admitted that there could be a larger conspiracy behind the attack.
“I would say it is sabotage of whatever we stand for or whatever we are doing,” said Musharraf.
He assured compensation for Geo TV channel and apologised to Bureau Chief Hamid Mir. He also promised that action would be initiated at once against those involved in the attack on the channel.
“I regret the attack on Geo TV by the police. I condemn it. I would like to assure the nation that one of the main strength of my reform efforts is freedom of the press and media is my mandate,” said Musharraf.
“Protecting human rights is also my mandate. I condemn any violation of these freedoms,” he added.
Gen Musharraf's apology is timely but is likely to renew speculation about his political future.
Condemning the incident, Pakistani Information Minister Mohammad Ali Durrani said it has created a negative impact on the government.
“The impact of this act is very negative on the government and the people of Pakistan. We are all concerned about it. We condemn it and the way President Mushaaraf has condemned it and shown concern it shows how he feels about it,” said Durani.
