New Delhi: The Deputy Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Council, Vasant Davkhare has given directives to the Home Ministry to ban cheerleaders in the Navi Mumbai match. He has also said that they are worse than bar dancers.
Meanwhile, the West Bengal Sports Minster, Subhash Chkarabarty will also talk to Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya to take necessary action against cheerleaders in the state.
And now, it's not just leaders against cheerleaders in Maharashtra. Even, the Navi Mumbai Police Commissioner Ramrao Wagh has taken moral policing to its literal level.
Earlier he had said that cheerleaders will not be allowed to perform 'vulgar dances', at any of the IPL matches and that they should neither be dressed inappropriately or make obscene movements while performing.
He had also said that organisers will now have to apply for a performance license for having cheerleaders on the field.
"We will not allow vulgar dances. If the organisers take performance license then cheerleaders will be allowed to perform, but we will make sure there are no vulgar dances. The performance depends on the way they are dressed and the movements they make should not amount to obscenity," the commissioner had said.
However, the commissioner's statement — which comes after the government in Maharashtra said that IPL cheerleaders were no better than bar dancers and had ordered restrictions on them — is of no relevance now that the Maharashtra Legislative Council has deemed fit to ban cheerleaders.
