Bangalore: The price of onion has hit the bottom in Karnataka, the second largest onion growing state in India. The wholesale purchasing rate of the best onion (price the growers get) has gone down to Rs 15 per kg and other mid-level onions are being purchased from the farmers for as low as Rs 5-10 per kg.

The onion growers in Karnataka are bringing their produces to wholesale markets fearing that the rain may spoil the standing crops. They are also apprehensive about the large scale dumping of onion from Nasik into Karnataka market.

Onion is grown in most parts of Karnataka. This year, onion is grown in more than 1,30,000 hectares of area. According to state government sources, crop in more than 5,000 hectares has been destroyed due to heavy rain.

The largest Agriculture Produces Marketing Committee (APMC) in Bangalore is receiving over 35,000 bags (50 Kilo bag) of onions a day from Maharashtra. However, it is getting just 3,000 bags (50 kilo bag) a day from within the state.

Expecting a bumper rate, farmers have grown onion in large areas across Karnataka, this year.
