New Delhi: Indian Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi had to settle for a defeat against Ukrainian Kateryna Lahno, who beat the Indian youngster convincingly at the Amity Grandmasters on Christmas Day on Monday.
Kateryna, 16, hasn't yet acquired the Grandmaster title as yet, but her reputation definitely got a boost as she has so far amassed 11 points out of the possible 18 in the 18-game event played six each in Classical, Rapid and Blitz format.
The Ukranian in fact overcame Parimarjan's challenge in all the three formats, beating the Indian teenager 3.5-2.5 in the Classical format, 4-2 at the Rapids and by 3.5-2.5 in the Blitz format in the tournament in its very first edition.
She also pocketed a prize money of Rs 3,00,000 after downing Parimarjan, 13, by winning the first and third games of the encounter.
The Indian did get a look-in at the Ukranian during the third game of the match, but pressure got to him during its course, handing Kateryna the victory. She however, was impressed with the Indian Grandmaster's challenge as she had a word of praise for him after the game.
Kateryna next plans to take part in the Gibraltar Chess.
Parimarjan will now participate at the Corus Grandmasters in the Netherlands.
