Pathankot's proximity to Pakistan Border makes it an important security base. The distance from Pathankot to Pakistan is 150 kms by crow flight.

Around six to seven Jaish-e-Mohammad terrorists stormed the Air Force base in Punjab's Pathankot on Saturday in which four terrorists and one IAF personnel were killed. The encounter between the security force and terrorists has ended but the combing operations are still underway.

Pathankot is important as it is the first line of air defense against any attack from Pakistan. It is MiG 21 airbase and also has an Army division.

Pathankot's proximity to Pakistan Border makes it an important security base. The distance from Pathankot to Pakistan is 145 kms as the crow flies.

The distance between Delhi and Pathankot is 479 kms, between Chandigarh and Pathankot is 253 kms, Jammu and Pathankot 105 kms.

The attack took place around 3:30 AM on Saturday. The terrorists have been cornered in the domestic area of the air force station and they were prevented from entering the technical area.

The security forces acted on the advance intelligence and National Security Guard teams were sent in advance on Friday evening to handle it. National Security Advisor Ajit Doval is coordinating the whole operation.

The sources said the JeM has planned much bigger attack than 2008 Mumbai terror strikes.

Garuda commandos amd Army troops are currently in action. A large number of policemen have also been moved in to the location. All northern airfields have been put on high alert.

The location of the attack is about 50 kms from Gurdaspur where another terror attack had taken place in July 2015. Earlier, superintendent of police of Gurdaspur was kidnapped but then later released.
