With low intake, the colleges which could not fill even 10 per cent of the available engineering seats hope no better days even after the begin of the second phase of counselling on September 28.
Around 26 colleges failed to secure even 10 admissions, a number which might come to null after the conclusion of the second phase of counselling. Six private engineering colleges had to make do with zero admissions. The college managements are likely to carry on with the existing students as none of the managements seem willing enough to shut their shops. "It is the responsibility of college managements to complete the course for the existing students. The students will surely opt out of such institutions in the second phase and admissions under management quota is a far-cry,” said an official who suggested that following the pattern of 2011, as many as 300 colleges are likely to run into debts due to poor intake in successive years.
In order to fill the convenor quota or category A seats, the outreach campaign by rural engineering colleges have been a missing feature this year due to tardy fee-reimbursement over the years. “The faculty members have become demanding about remuneration and for colleges with basic infrastructure, it is difficult to run an institution profitably even with 50 per cent admissions.
Hence multiple institutions under the same management have the same faculty members on their roll in all these institutions to cut costs. The blame should rest with the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) for sanctioning new colleges this year as well,” said the chairman of a private engineering college. He went on to add that running colleges with low intake has led to accruing debt on part of the colleges which might have to close down in time.
The situation was no different in 2011 as around 85,000 seats were left vacant at the end of the second phase of counselling.
This year, around 1 lakh seats had no takers after the first phase of counselling due to the delay in admission procedure and the numbers are unlikely to change by September 30, at the conclusion of second phase of counselling.
