Chandigarh: Security was on Sunday stepped up across the Punjab in the wake of uneasy calm among the radicals after the apex court had rejected the petition of Khalistani terrorist Devinderpal Singh Bhullar to commute his death sentence. The deployment of police have been increased by mobilising Punjab Armed Police and Indian Reserve Battalion personnel at all district levels, top police sources said in Chandigarh.

Besides, the state government is mulling to deploy para-military forces at vulnerable places in the state, they said. Some 60,000 police personnel and over ten companies of PML have been advised to remain alert, they added. Meanwhile, the radicals, including Damdami Taksal, have decided to take out march from Fatehgarh Sahib on April 18 in favour of clemency to Bhullar.

The Supreme Court had on April 12, 2013 dismissed Khalistan Liberation Force terrorist's plea for commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment on ground of delay in deciding his mercy petition. Bhullar was awarded death penalty for triggering a bomb blast here in September 1993, killing nine people and injuring 25 others, including then Youth Congress president MS Bitta.
