Panaji: Goa Mines and Geology Department has issued show-cause notices to around 100 mining firms for allegedly encroaching outside their mining leases, which has been pointed out in the Justice MB Shah Commission report on illegal iron ore mining.
The notices, issued on Tuesday by the department have asked all the 100 mine owners why action should not be initiated against them for encroaching outside their mining leases. They have been given 15 days time to respond. "Of the total notices issued, 54 are the mining lease holders and rest are individuals," Director of Mines Prasanna Acharya said.
These violations were pointed out by the Shah Commission in its report. The commission has said that total of Rs 35,000 crore were looted by various mining firms by encroaching outside their mining leases. The mine owners, however, have denied these allegations saying the encroachments shown in the Commission report were actually leases owned by others.
