KANCHEEPURAM: The second bid on bootlegger ‘Roki’ Ramesh, undergoing treatment at the Chengalpet GH, caused panic at the hospital on Saturday.Patients and their relatives ran helter-skelter on seeing the gang wielding sickles, trying to hack Ramesh to death. Ramesh sustained injuries on his neck and head, said sources. “He was lucky to survive, as police personnel reacted swiftly and tried to nab the attackers, who managed to escape,” said Kancheepuram SP S Manoharan. Denying the absence of security personnel, he said that they have deployed four armed personnel for Ramesh, who is wanted in 12 cases, including double murder cases and extortion, in several stations in Villupuram and Puducherry. “Ramesh was shifted to Chennai Apollo hospitals with tight security,” said the SP.The brutal murder of two of the accomplice of Mano - Sankar (alias) Kanagasabai and Rafiq (alias) Ravi - at the hands of Ramesh in 2010 seeded vendetta between the two gangs. In retaliation to the deaths, Mano and Thikil (alias) Jagadesan murdered Ramesh’s brother Karthick (27) on Oct 28 last year.Fearing for life, Ramesh was leading a silent life in Chrompet in Chennai with his wife Deepa. However, Mano and Thikil planned to eliminate Ramesh after setting a trap for him on Tuesday in the name of a compromise meeting to settle the long-standing feud among them. Though, they lured him into the plan to eliminate him, he escaped with injuries and took shelter in Kezhil Kudungalur station.
