New Delhi: On Friday morning, External Affairs Minister Natwar Singh, who has been named in the Volcker Committee report, met the Prime Minister and Congress President Sonia Gandhi to plead his case.
Natwar said that UN investigators had not talked to him before accusing him of for receiving kicbacks in the Iraq oil-for-food programme.
However Paul Volcker, who prepared the report, stated that all beneficiaries had been notified in advance and their responses included in the report.
He then met CPI leaders AB Bardhan and D Raja to discuss the details of the report. Both stated that suing the United Nations was a meaningless exercise.
They also claimed that they did not believe the allegations of the Volcker committee report.
For the time being, it appears that Natwar has the support of Sonia Gandhi and the CPI both of who claim that the External Affairs Minister has a strong case.
The government has ordered a probe into allegations and the Congress party has decided to seek legal help.
With the Left on his side, the pressure on Natwar Singh has reduced and he appears to be safe for some time.
