Depressed for being unable to pay pending college fees of Rs 14,000, 20-year-old first year degree student Shiva Krishna ended his life by committing suicide at his residence in Hyderabad last week. His family in Mahbubnagar was under financial distress due to extensive crop loss. After losing all hope, Shiva decided to end his life.
"Shiva was sad as he failed to pay college fees. The family was not in a position to pay the college fees due to failure of crops," Shiva's friend Narendra said.
This is not just a one off case. Student suicides are on the rise in Telangana. Within a week 3 cases have been reported and the primary reason appears to be inability to pay fees.
Just a few days ago, a 15-year-old student committed suicide by jumping in front of a moving train in Karimnagar. The student had left behind a chilling selfie message on his phone explaining why he was committing suicide. The student was reportedly made to stand outside his classroom and humiliated by his teacher for not paying his school fee.
"I am leaving. Please do not look for me. Sir asked me to pay fees. He punished by asking us to stand outside class. We have paid half amount of Rs 5000. We don't have more money. I don't want to go to school. I am committing suicide as I can't find any other way," the deceased student had said in his video
Concerned over the suicides, Telangana government is planning to appoint a committee to regulate fee structures in school. It is the responsibility of the government to conduct counselling sessions to prevent student from committing suicide and take strict action against the high-handedness of private educational institutes.
