BANGALORE: In a release, BBMP commissioner Siddiah announced that the Palike has geared up to clean the post Deepavali debris.The commissioner had urged the public to keep city clean while celebrating Deepavali and had also told then to take care of the environment while celebrating the festival. A day before the festival, he said that poisonous gas released from crackers will spoil health of both elders as well as children, and requested children to play with less harmful crackers.In Bangalore, around 3,500 tonnes of garbage is collected everyday. After the Ayudhpooja festival, it increased to 14,000 tonnes. Quite a lot of garbage has emerged as a result of burning crackers on Deepavali. “During Deepavali which is celebrated for more than three days, it will take the Palike at least one week to clear the debris,” a BBMP official said.Commissioner’s directives for the clean-up■ Public should not dump garbage collected through crackers in the drain. They should sweep and give it to the pourakarmikas■ BBMP sweepers should remove papers, plastic and other materials from drain, so that water can flow easily■ Public should not park their vehicles on the roadside while the Palike team is cleaning the road, as these vehicles on roadside will distract their work.■ More number of people have been deputed at Palike health centres, so that public can rush their if any accidents due to fire or crackers.■ Chief engineers of each zone should take charge to keeptheir ward clean.
