Watch: US satirist explains Diwali to Americans
Stephen Colbert took it upon himself to explain to his American audience the significance of Diwali.

New Delhi: "Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, a five day holiday, staring on Dhanteras, celebrated on the 13th lunar day of Krishna Paksha of the Hindu calendar month of Ashwin, and ends on Bhai Dooj, celebrated on the second lunar day of Shukla Paksha of the Hindu calendar month of Karthik, you know, Diwali."

With Diwali trending on Twitter globally and an onslaught of messages and wishes on the social networking site pushing everything else to the background, American political satirist and television host Stephen Colbert took it upon himself to explain to his American audience the significance of Diwali.

Colbert, the host of Comedy Central's 'The Colbert Report', presents a caricatured version of the Diwali, giving it his customary 'tip of the hat'. But his 'wag of the finger' was for Indian President Pranab Mukherjee for urging Indians to celebrate Diwali without noise and air pollution.

"Folks, this Mukher-jerk is just another liberal non-believer, ruining the true meaning of Diwali," he joked.
