Hundreds of families living in the Iritty-Mattanur region of the district here heaved a sigh of relief as the water-level in the Pazhassi Dam came down since Wednesday morning, averting a major disaster.
The flood-waters that engulfed the Iritty region also receded on Wednesday following a respite in the torrential rains lashing the hill areas located on the Kerala-Karnataka border. No untoward incidents were reported from the region since the water-level came down in the Pazhassi reservoir.
The water-level came down by about 10 metres on Wednesday morning although only nine of the 16 shutters of the dam could be kept open to let off the water-flow. The situation still remains precarious as no one knows what exactly would happen if another bout of rains break out in the coming days.
Efforts to keep open the rest of the shutters of the dam are yet to be made, and the authorities seemed to be as helpless as the local people in this regard.
There had been blatant lapses on the part of the officials entrusted with the upkeep of the dam and this had led to a near-disastrous situation that put the people in the entire district on tenterhooks.
Minister for Water Resources P J Joseph rushed to the spot and issued instructions to the officials treating the situation on par with a Mullapperiyar-like emergency.Relief measures were in progress, according to the district authorities.
The Revenue officials have been directed to make an estimate of the losses suffered by the people. Obviously, it may take time for the victims to get any assistance from the government.
