New Delhi: The dope taint on Indian weightlifter Monika Devi has cast a shadow over India’s chances at the Olympics. However, Secretary General of the Indian Weightifting Federation, Baldev Raj Gulati is convinced Monika is innocent.
“As sure as I am of my name is I can be that she has not taken drugs. This is an accusation,” he says.
When asked if Gulati, as the Secretary General of the federation, should take some responsibility of, he said the Sports Authority of India was to blame. “I totally hold SAI responsible for the slip shot manner in which they have carried out the tests,” he said.
Gulati said it would have been a shame if it would have been a shame had the incident come to light in Beijing. “It will not only be a bigger shame it will be suicidal for the federation as such. And therefore I say that with full sense of accountability for the federation that she is absolutely clean. She has taken no drugs and no drugs have been found that are banned even in her report,” he said.
