South Korean actor Song Joong-ki confirmed that he did not charge a penny for his upcoming film Hopeless. The actor attended the Busan Film Festival recently where he spoke about the South Korean film and his part in it. The Vincenzo star admitted that he was ’embarrassed’ that his decision to forgo his fees for the film is making the headline. Song Joong-ki said he didn’t want the film’s quality to be impacted due to his fee. He added that eventually, the production house head gave him an ‘appearance fee.’
As reported Koreaboo, Song Joong-ki said, “I didn’t receive any fee because I was worried that the original charm of the work would decrease if my appearance commercialized it. It’s not a big deal, but I was embarrassed because it was talked about too much.”
Speaking about the ‘appearance fee’, Song Joong-ki said, “A few days ago, I had a meal with the CEO of the production company and received the watch he was wearing as a gift. I got a watch as my pay.” What a wonderful gesture!
Hopeless helmed by director Kim Chang-hoon, Song Joong-Ki essays the role of the leader of a criminal organization who helps a youngster escape the wrath of his abusive stepfather. The duo team up to escape their hellish life, but the only way left to do that is by becoming a part of it.
Last month, speaking with Yonhap News, Song Joong-ki said Hopeless is not a ‘kind film’. He added that the film is an example of how he is “still hungry for roles in diverse genres”. “I have a strong desire for it. There is still room for improvement. I’m just giving it a try,” he said.
Hopeless had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival and is set to release in South Korea on October 11, 2023.
