It is common for many people to let off some steam by raising a toast with their friends after a tiring day’s work or to celebrate some occasion. However, even small amounts of alcohol can have adverse consequences on health. As per health experts, consuming alcohol can lead to health problems like alcoholic hepatitis, cirrhosis, and many other issues. This space articulates the dangers of drinking wine.
1. Bad Cholesterol- Drinking more hard liquor, beer, mixed drinks, and excess red wine increases your bad cholesterol or LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels. Alcohol can also increase the triglycerides level which can raise your risk of heart ailments and other health issues.
2. Breast Cancer- People prone to breast cancer should limit their intake of alcoholic beverages, i.e.- beer, wine, and liquor. It is because these beverages increase a woman’s risk of hormone-receptor-positive breast cancer.
3. Increased uric acid levels- Alcohol comprises purines, which the body converts into uric acid. Alcohol also stops the uric acid from leaving the body and its high levels can cause gout. All types of alcohol, including wine, may increase uric acid levels and gout flares.
4. Lung disease- Chronic alcohol use and excessive drinking can greatly increase the risk of several pulmonary conditions, including lung disease, alcoholic pneumonia, acute lung injury, and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
Intake of alcohol leads to many such health impairments over time and its excessive intake is even more dangerous. Alcoholism or alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a type of addiction where a person cannot control his or her alcohol consumption and is dependent on it both physically and emotionally.
AUD is a serious chronic disease and can lead to several health ailments. According to a study in Alcohol Research Current Reviews in 2011, alcohol abuse is an underlying cause of more than 30 health conditions. These conditions include cancer, infectious diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and liver disease – and a contributing factor to many more. It should, therefore, be taken very seriously, and people should do all they can to stop its progress as soon as possible.
As per the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), moderate drinking refers to one drink per day for women and two drinks per day for men. Drinking beyond this limit indicates drinking too much.
