The fast food world is abuzz with news that Chipotle is poised to enter the burger business.
First spotted by Bloomberg, the embattled Mexican fast food chain filed a US trademark application earlier this month for rights to the name 'Better Burger'.
It would be the latest expansion for the company, which also operates ShopHouse, a restaurant chain specializing in Southeast Asian cuisine, and Pizzeria Locale.
The move would also further crowd the mid-sized burger market that is already saturated with brands like Five Guys, Smashburger and Shake Shack which bill themselves as alternatives to burger giants McDonald's and Burger King.
Chipotle spokesman Chris Arnold confirmed to Bloomberg: “It's a growth seed idea we are exploring.”
A series of E.coli outbreaks plagued the chain in the US last year, sickening dozens of customers across the country, forcing the closure of stores and spurring a federal health investigation.
