Madame Web has swung into theatres and the reviews are a mixed for this Spider-Man spin off film. Starring Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, the recently released Marvel movie features talented actors including Sydney Sweeney, Adam Scott, Celeste O’Connor, Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim and Emma Roberts. Set in a universe where Spider-Man is yet to make an appearance, but the film drops hints about the iconic character, sparking speculation about a friendly neighbourhood superhero’s cameo in future instalments. Meanwhile, Roberts’ role was initially kept a secret, but it has been revealed by Comicbook.com that she plays Mary Parker. Meanwhile, Scott plays the character of Ben Parker, who works with Dakota’s Cassandra Webb as a paramedic.
The film shows Mary is married to Ben, contrary to the comics and other Spider-Man adaptations where Mary’s husband is Richard Parker. In the comic book, Mary and Richard are secret SHIELD agents who are assigned missions to go against villains. In the next part, Madame Web could potentially touch upon the tragic events leading to Mary’s demise and Peter might be shown getting adopted by his aunt and uncle. An interesting scene in the movie involves the three Spider-Women assisting Mary and Ben Parker to reach the hospital for the baby’s birth. However, the film keeps Peter’s name a mystery, leaving the audience in suspense.
In an earlier interview with The Wrap, Dakota Johnson said, “There were drastic changes and I can’t even tell you what they were. It added so many different camera set-ups, like triple the amount of work and it was very complex and there’s only like minor differences between each version of the same scene, so it was like puzzle pieces, and really paying attention to what moment we’re in, and what angle we’re in, and continuity and things like that. I did get very lost and director SJ Clarkson always knew exactly where we were, which was really incredible.”
Madame Web follows Dakota Johnson’s character, Cassandra Webb, shown as a New York City paramedic, who later develops mystic abilities. As the storyline progresses, Cassandra finds herself in a position where she has to save three young women, Julia Cornwall, Mattie Franklin and Anya Corazon, from a mysterious enemy determined to end their lives.
