New Delhi: AIADMK leader Thambidurai was on Wednesday elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha by the members of the House. Thambidurai, who had filed his nomination on Tuesday, was backed by Bharatiya Janata Party leaders Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh and got the support of all other parties too.
Congratulating Thambidurai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Thambidurai has been unanimously elected as the Deputy Speaker of the House, I thank all members of the House. Thambidurai has served as the Deputy Speaker in the past. He has been a minister too. He is also an academician."
Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge too congratulated Thambidurai. The Congress now is unlikely to get the Leader of Opposition post after the Attorney General told the Speaker that the party doesn't have the requisite number of seats.
