Kolkata: The first Maoist has surrendered in West Bengal after the state government announced a rehabilitation package for the rebels.
Shobhan Karak, a member of the Maoist action squad, surrendered in West Midnapore on Thursday. Karak surrendered with a .303 rifle and a few live cartridges. He has 13 cases of murder and sedition registered against him.
Karak surrendered before the West Midnapore Superintendent of Police, Jhargram Superintendent of Police and central Reserve Police Force IG.
"I was a member of Sidhu Soren's squad. I was forced to join the squad as the Maoists threatened to kill my family members," said Karak after his surrender.
The state government will provide Rs 1.5 lakh to help Karak enter the mainstream. Police officials claim that more Maoist surrender will take place in the next seven days.
