Kolkata: West Bengal Pollution Control Board on Wednesday, issued fresh guidelines for political parties, on use of microphones during campaigning for the Assembly polls.

A Board spokesman said, the parties should ensure that the area of meeting place is 100 metres from the 'silence zone' and should be covered in such a manner that noise does not travel beyond the covered area.

He said that speakers and loudspeakers would be used in covered area with prior permission of the competent authority, as the case may be.

"The box may be so arranged that the audience may hear but it cannot travel beyond the covered area. Such meeting can only be held during day time maintaining the noise level as specified in industrial, commercial, residential areas and silence zone," the spokesman said.

He said that sound system should be used only during daytime in open area after obtaining necessary permission from the competent authority.

"During use of microphone in open air, sound limiter should be attached with the amplifier for regulating noise level," he said.

The spokesman said that the fresh guidelines were issued to remove any misgiving among the contesting parties about the rules and regulations under Noise (regulation and control) Rules 2000.
