From our childhood, we have learned that in a 24-hour cycle, we experience sunrise in the morning and sunset in the evening. However, growing up, we learned that there are places which see sunset quite late at night. But, did you know that there are places across the world where the sun does not set for more than weeks together? You will be able to see the sun bright and shiny at midnight as well here. Can you guess the place? The video of the location has been going viral on the internet.
The phenomenon of the midnight sun is common in very few countries like Norway, Sweden, Canada and Alaska. There is one such place in Norway, Lofoten, where you can enjoy a bright sunny day at midnight as well. A now-viral video was posted on Michelle Von Kalben’s account. The clip began with, “I found a place where the Sun does not set.” She then shared photos between the 12 hours of sunset to sunrise of herself from 6 pm. In the first click, she posed against a rocky hill. The next few snaps show a house, a dock, a road, a whitish-sandy beach, lush green pastures and much more.
Her caption read, “Midnight sun has arrived in Lofoten. Yesterday the sun set and rose for the last time, now it will be above the horizon for multiple weeks during Polar Day. The opposite is the Polar Night in winter, when the sun remains below the horizon for multiple weeks, creating a lot of magical darkness with other phenomena such as northern lights.”
The clip has received 1 million views on Instagram. It captures how Lofoten remains lit up from 6 pm to 6 am and there is no darkness, even for a few minutes. Naturally, this left the comment section intrigued and in awe of nature. A user wrote, “But isn’t it also 100% dark during certain times of the year?” Another user offered to explain the midnight sun concept. She wrote, “Explanation: For about 6 weeks every year the sun doesn’t set here, known as the midnight sun. Then for another 6 weeks of the year, the sun does not rise, known as the polar night. It’s very beautiful.” One user joked, “Does this mean that nothing bad happens at 3 am cause there’s light to keep the demons out?”
