BJP national secretary Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Monday hit out at Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for referring to artist Diljit Dosanjh as a “Punjabi singer” instead of “Indian singer” in a social media post. Sirsa went on to call it a “deliberate mischief through wordplay”.
The Canadian prime minister made a surprise appearance at Diljit Dosanjh’s concert in Toronto. Videos of the Trudeau’s meetup with Diljit surfaced on social media.
Diversity is ‘s strength. Prime Minister @JustinTrudeau came to check out history in the making: we sold out the Rogers Centre! pic.twitter.com/vyIKlvvplM— DILJIT DOSANJH (@diljitdosanjh) July 14, 2024
Sharing a photo from the event, the Canadian PM wrote on microblogging site X, “Stopped by the Rogers Centre to wish Diljit Dosanjh good luck before his show. Canada is a great country — one where a guy from Punjab can make history and sell out stadiums. Diversity isn’t just our strength. It’s a superpower.”

Manjinder Singh Sirsa also took to microblogging site X and wrote, “Let me correct this, Mr. Prime Minister- where one guy from INDIA can make history and sell out stadiums.” He further added, “Your gesture of lauding a fantastic artist like @diljitdosanjh has been totally overshadowed by your deliberate mischief through wordplay.”
In a video message, the BJP leader lauded the singer for making a “mark on the world” through his art and called Trudeau’s meet-up with Diljit a “moment of pride”. However, Sirsa also pointed out that the Canadian PM did not “act with dignity” by not mentioning India in his appreciation post for the singer.
