Washington: The US on Monday appreciated Pakistani intelligence agencies for capturing senior al Qaeda leader Younis al-Mauritani, who was tasked by Osama bin Laden to focus on hitting targets of economic importance in America, Europe and Australia.
"This is an example of the longstanding partnership between the US and Pakistan in fighting terrorism, which has taken many terrorists off the battlefield over the past decade," the White House spokesman, Josh Earnest said.
"We applaud the actions of Pakistan's intelligence and security services that led to the capture of a senior al Qaeda operative who was involved in planning attacks against the interests of the United States and many other countries," Earnest told reporters travelling with the US President Barack Obama to New Jersey.
The Pakistani Army in a statement said that it has captured al Mauritani, who it said had been tasked by Osama bin Laden with targeting economic interests in the United States, Europe and Australia.
The other two individuals, arrested by Pakistan, were not identified.
